Introduction to your academic library

This is an overview of the Brengle Library of the College for Officer Training.

Start with what you already know and what you already have

Remember, this is a cycle, not a straight line. The proof that you are learning is that you have new and better questions!  Recuerde, este es un ciclo, no una línea recta. ¡La prueba de que está aprendiendo es que tiene preguntas nuevas y mejores!

What do you already know?

  • What is the assignment? It can be useful to create your paper template and paste in everything that is required from the syllabus.
  • Why did you choose this topic? Write freely what you already think about it (don't worry about getting it right; you'll correct it later) and why it is worth learning about.
  • What is the big picture? This forms the background to your research question, keeping it in context and connecting it to the assignment. If this sounds like a herrneneutical worksheet, that's because this is the essential foundational process of any research.
  • What do you wonder about? As you put into your own words what you are learning, and think about the purpose of the assignment, you will have questions. Choose one as your research topic, to focus your research and save your time, and also make your paper more interesting.

What do you already have access to, at home or online?

  • Reference works such as Bible handbook, Bible background commentary, Mounce Complete expository dictionary
  • Bible software, such as BibleGatewayPlus, BlueLetterBible, Accordance or Logos
  • Textbooks
  • LibGuides, which are constantly updated to include more online resources and have downloadable Guides such as How to research a doctrine paper

¿Qué sabes ya?

  • ¿Cuál es la tarea? Puede ser útil crear su plantilla de papel y pegar todo lo que se requiere del plan de estudios.
  • ¿Por qué elegiste este tema? Escriba libremente lo que ya piensa (no se preocupe por hacerlo bien; lo corregirá más adelante) y por qué vale la pena aprenderlo.
  • ¿Cuál es el panorama general? Esto forma el fondo de su pregunta de investigación, manteniéndola en contexto y conectándola a la tarea. Si esto suena como una hoja de trabajo hermenéutica, es porque este es el proceso fundamental de cualquier investigación.
  • ¿De qué te preguntas? Cuando exprese con sus propias palabras lo que está aprendiendo y piense en el propósito de la tarea, tendrá preguntas. Elija uno como tema de investigación, para enfocar su investigación y ahorrar tiempo, y también hacer que su trabajo sea más interesante.

¿A qué ya tiene acceso, en casa o en línea?

  • Obras de referencia como el manual de la Biblia, comentarios de fondo de la Biblia, diccionario expositivo Mounce Complete
  • Software bíblico, como BibleGatewayPlus, BlueLetterBible, Accordancia o Logos
  • Libros de texto
  • LibGuides, que se actualizan constantemente para incluir más recursos en línea y tienen guías descargables como Cómo investigar un documento de doctrina

Use this Webform to let us know what you need and we will find it and either e-mail it to you, or check it out to you and put it in your mailbox. Each research request needs to be on its own Webform. Two requests? Two Webforms!

The librarians are here to do what you cannot do for yourselves. There is a tutorial on Using the library catalog if you need a refresher :)  If you have followed the research steps and are stuck the librarians are always available for a telephone consultation.

In all requests, include what you have already done. For resources you need, provide the TITLE and CALL NUMBER, e.g., A certain sound: a primer on open-air preaching BV4235.O7 D46 2019

Los bibliotecarios están aquí para hacer lo que ustedes no pueden hacer por ustedes mismos. Renewing and returning books /Renovación y devolución de libros

The Library Help page has a tutorial on renewing your books online. If for some reason you cannot, please e-mail a librarian.

Return your books to the box outside the library and we will check them in at 4:00 as usual.		 La página de Ayuda de la Biblioteca tiene un tutorial sobre cómo renovar sus libros en línea. Si por alguna razón no puede, envíe un correo electrónico a una bibliotecaria.
